Energy + Environment keeps you up to date and in compliance with state and federal codes. Since 2005, the NEC (National Electric Code) requires luminaire disconnects on all new lighting fixtures and all retrofitted lighting fixtures. Effective as of 2015, the US Dept of Energy is phasing out all T12 lamps and magnetic ballasts in this country.
The reason for this initiative is two-fold:
- T12 lamps and magnetic ballasts are grossly inefficient when compared to other light sources.
- T12 lamps and magnetic ballasts contain harmful chemicals and heavy metals (i.e., Mercury).
Whereas, T8 lamps (the direct replacement to T12) contain significantly less heavy metals and electronic ballasts contain almost no harmful chemicals. T8 lamps and electronic ballasts, or other technologies are more efficient and can significantly reduce your electrical energy consumption.
